It's Spring which means we are ready to lighten up and shake off the sluggishness of winter!

In Ayurveda, Spring is when "Kapha" has accumulated over the long rainy winter. Kapha is the energy of heaviness, coolness, dampness, and oiliness. It features solidity, steadiness, and calmness. It's the energy of the Earth element and it brings solidity to the body giving us great bones, skin, and hair.

People who are Kapha dominant have strong, heavier body types, strong teeth, and a calm steady temperament. They are usually happy with how things are - and don't make fast moves. They can be excellent business people and exude a kind of quiet power. They are a very steadying influence in a family.

When Kapha is too much, however, a person may find themselves with health issues like weight gain, obesity, sadness and depression, joint dislocation, swollen eyes, and mucous issues.

Every body has some Kapha element in it. It's just important to not let the Kapha imbalance become too much and make us become too slow and heavy. Exercise and movement are definitely part of the prescription to get a Kapha-dominant person out of a rut!

Kapha types should steer clear of sweet fruits and sweet tastes and enjoy pungent spicy herbs instead. Foods like curry, tomato-based dishes, ginger, garlic, and cayenne. Citrus like grapefruit and lemon water can also be helpful. Protein is better than grains.

Stop! No ice please.

In Ayurveda, we don’t use ice or drink icy cold drinks. This is because cold drinks and foods turn off the digestive fire which can lead to constipation or toxins accumulating in your gut. For better digestion, take your food and drinks at room temperature.

Here's to greens in your glass and sunshine in your day.
