Brain Fog, Mood Swings & Mental Confusion: A Case Study

Lydia came to see me because she was struggling with brain fog, mental confusion, anxiety, and the early fatigue of perimenopause.

In her late forties, she described feeling "exhausted and unbalanced", but what worried her most was her sudden change in mental clarity and mood. She felt like her brain simply wasn't working, and she was swinging between anxiety and bursts of irritation. She leaned back on the couch in my Dunsborough clinic and asked wryly, "Is there a herb for rage?"

I told her: yes, there is.

Where Bad Moods Come From

Your brain is the command centre of your nervous system. It has two main jobs:

  • To run your body's automatic processes - heart beating, lungs breathing, muscles moving.

  • To create thoughts.

Emotions like anger or anxiety begin with internal thoughts. The more intense the thoughts, the more intense the emotional response.

For example, imagine you're driving on the highway and someone cuts in a little too close. Some days you let them in without a second thought. Other days - when your mind is already stressed or irritated - you might think, "What a jerk! That was dangerous!" and feel a surge of anger or even road rage.

The key point:

Big emotions begin with intense thoughts.

So a brain producing more negative thoughts will produce more negative moods.

Lydia noticed her thoughts becoming unusually negative. That increase in internal negativity triggered her swings between anxiety and anger. At the same time, her brain fog and confusion signalled that her brain wasn't getting enough nutrition or proper circulation.

Signs of Reduced Blood Flow

When I assessed her, Lydia described:

  • dizziness on standing

  • sudden hair dryness and thinning

  • dry facial skin

  • tingling in hands and feet

These are all signs that blood flow to the head and extremities may be reduced, affecting both nutrient delivery and toxin clearance in the brain.

Good blood flow feeds brain cells and helps clear metabolic waste. When circulation weakens, the brain may experience:

  • slower cognition

  • fogginess

  • mood changes

  • increased sensitivity to stress

This perfectly matched Lydia's symptoms.

Herbal Prescription for Brain And Mood Support

I prescribed Greens Health Brain & Mood Capsules, using freshly ground herbs to deliver the most active plant nutrients to the brain.

The key herbs included:

  • Rosemary

A traditional memory herb with its aroma alone that stimulates the brain. Rosemary acts like a gentle "brush" for the nervous system, enhancing clarity and helping clear accumulated toxins.

  • Brahmi (Bacopa)

A famous Ayurvedic brain tonic that supports clearer thinking and more stable moods. A 2014 randomised controlled study of 437 people using Bacopa found it improved cognition, particularly speed of attention and reduced choice reaction time.

  • Velvet Bean (Mucuna)

A nourishing bean containing natural compounds that support dopamine pathways, mood balance, and neural communication.

Nourishing Tincture Blend For Brain Fog And Mood Swings

To address her dryness, fatigue, and circulatory issues, I also created an individualised tincture:

Lydia's Nourishing Herbal Formula (210ml)

  • Damiana - 40ml

  • Black Cohosh - 40ml

  • Hawthorn - 30ml

  • Ashwagandha - 40ml

  • Lavender - 30ml

Dose: 5ml twice daily for two weeks.

Hawthorn supported heart function and circulation to the head.

Ashwagandha nourished her adrenals and reduced stress. Check here for a FREE warming Ashwagandha Chair recipe.

Black Cohosh supported hormonal balance.

Lavender calmed her nervous system.

Damiana supported moistening and nourishment of dry tissues.

Results Of A Brain Fog & Mood Swings Case Study

At her follow-up, Lydia reported:

"I feel heaps better. Everything you gave me made a difference. I've had no rage, less anxiety, no back pain, more energy. Even though it's a busy time leading up to Mother's Day, I haven't felt stressed. The herbs are gentle, aren't they? I just feel better."

After one more repeat of the Brain & Mood Capsules and her Nourishing Formula, she returned to her usual self—clear-headed, balanced, and energised.
